What is a Humistor?

A humistor is a type of variable resistor whose resistance changes with the change in humidity of the surrounding air. Humistors are also sometimes referred as humidity sensitive resistor or resistive humidity sensor. Humidity is the amount of gaseous water or water vapor present in the air. The name humistor is obtained from the combination of words: humidity and resistor. Humistor is very sensitive to the humidity. Therefore, it is used as a sensor for measuring the humidity in the surrounding air.

Explain the working Principal of a Humistor.

Humistor is generally made of an organic polymer such as polyamide resin, polyethylene, or a metal oxide. The resistance of the humistor is depends on the concentration of absorbed water molecules. When the humidity increases, the water molecules absorbed by the humistor increases and the humistor becomes more electrically conductive. As a result, the resistance of the humistor decreases. On the other hand, when the humidity decreases, the water molecules absorbed by the humistor decreases and humistor becomes less electrically conductive. As a result, the resistance of the humistor increases. Likewise, the humistor detects and measures the change in humidity.
