This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 314 pages. Book excerpt: For more than a century, the Olympics have been the modern world's most significant sporting event. Indeed, they deserve much credit for globalizing sport beyond the boundaries of the Anglo-American universe, where it originated, into broader global realms. By the 1930s, the Olympics had become a global mega-event that occupied the attention of the media, the interest of the public and the energies of nation-states. Since then, projected by television, funded by global capital and fattened by the desires of nations to garner international prestige, the Olympics have grown to gargantuan dimensions. In the course of its epic history, the Olympics have left numerous legacies, from unforgettable feats to monumental stadiums, from shining triumphs to searing tragedies, from the dazzling debuts on the world's stage of new cities and nations to notorious campaigns of national propaganda. The Olympics represent an essential component of modern global history. The Olympic movement itself has, since the 1990s, recognized and sought to shape its numerous legacies with mixed success as this book makes clear. It offers ground-breaking analyses of the power of Olympic legacies, positive and negative, and surveys the subject from Athens in 1896 to Beijing in 2008, and indeed beyond. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Willard later made an initially successful comeback but was defeated by Luis Firpo in 1923 and retired from the ring. He died in 1968, largely forgotten by the boxing public. Featuring photographs from the Willard family archives, this first full-length biography provides a detailed portrait of one of America's boxing greats.

Book excerpt: An innovative, deeply researched history of Chinese medicine in America and the surprising interplay between Eastern and Western medical practice Chinese medicine has a long history in the United States, with written records dating back to the American colonial period. In this intricately crafted history, Tamara Venit Shelton chronicles the dynamic systems of knowledge, therapies, and materia medica crossing between China and the United States from the eighteenth century to the present. Chinese medicine, she argues, has played an important and often unacknowledged role in both facilitating and undermining the consolidation of medical authority among formally trained biomedical scientists in the United States. Practitioners of Chinese medicine, as racial embodiments of “irregular” medicine, became useful foils for Western physicians struggling to assert their superiority of practice. At the same time, Chinese doctors often embraced and successfully employed Orientalist stereotypes to sell their services to non-Chinese patients skeptical of modern biomedicine. What results is a story of racial constructions, immigration politics, cross-cultural medical history, and the lived experiences of Asian Americans in American history.

Read and Download Barbara Dole Larsen Book The Human Dilemma in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Book The Human Dilemma PDF. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 290 pages. Book excerpt: Who has never wondered why people behave the way they do? They create glorious music, art and literature. They have uncovered the secrets of the universe and disease, yet have not been able to figure out how to get along with each other without war. The Human Dilemmasets out to find out why. It describes how humans evolved, how their wonderful brains work, and what they are like when they are born. The author explores the reasons individuals grow up with different personalities, depending on the societies in which they mature, from hunter-gatherers in Africa to industrial Americans. She then turns to relationships between the sexes, the temptations of power, and why religious differences lead to violence. The Human Dilemma explains, in simple, readable language, how human nature, customs and beliefs interfere with mankind's ability to resolve the overwhelming problems facing the world today. Violent conflicts between cultures have become more volatile over the years. Many believe it is man's nature to fight, yet ancient civilizations like Crete were peaceful and everyone was treated equally, women as well as men. The same is true of two hunting gathering tribes in Africa that have followed the same way of life for thousands of years. Perhaps it is just as human to cooperate peacefully in solving problems as it is to fight over them, and just as human to see our fellows as equal instead of superior or inferior. Why then do men regard women as inferior in so many societies? And why do so many nations plunge into battle, especially since the invention of nuclear bombs makes it possible to wipe out our entire species? The newest peril is global warming, caused by the spewing of carbon into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, which may eventually change our climate back to the days before mankind existed. Some animals have already become extinct because they cannot adjust to warmer weather. Humans may not survive such a drastic change. Our magnificent brains are capable of inventing solutions to all the problems confronting us and entrepreneurs are eager to put these inventions into practice. Why, then, don't we do it? Is there some flaw in our nature that makes it easier to blame each other instead and find excuses for relieving our frustrations in warfare? As the author studied the sciences for answers to her questions, she became convinced that only by fully understanding our nature and the reasons why it is difficult for us to confront our problems can we hope to resolve them and continue to survive. Her conclusions are found in The Human Dilemma. "An original and thought-provoking book which will appeal to a very wide audience." -Richard Edelman, Psychoanalyst "In her wonderfully wide-ranging exploration of human nature, Barbara Larsen has distilled her research into a lucid and absolutely fascinating book." -Richard Edelman, Psychoanalyst "The writer's style is open and exploratory, warmly self-sharing, and it is an enjoyable as well as a searching and provocative learning experience." -Saul L. Dole, Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Pennsylvania

Book excerpt: How gangsta rap shocked America, made millions, and pulled back the curtain on an urban crisis. How is it that gangsta rap—so dystopian that it struck aspiring Brooklyn rapper and future superstar Jay-Z as “over the top”—was born in Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood, surf, and sun? In the Reagan era, hip-hop was understood to be the music of the inner city and, with rare exception, of New York. Rap was considered the poetry of the street, and it was thought to breed in close quarters, the product of dilapidated tenements, crime-infested housing projects, and graffiti-covered subway cars. To many in the industry, LA was certainly not hard-edged and urban enough to generate authentic hip-hop; a new brand of black rebel music could never come from La-La Land. But it did. In To Live and Defy in LA, Felicia Viator tells the story of the young black men who built gangsta rap and changed LA and the world. She takes readers into South Central, Compton, Long Beach, and Watts two decades after the long hot summer of 1965. This was the world of crack cocaine, street gangs, and Daryl Gates, and it was the environment in which rappers such as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E came of age. By the end of the 1980s, these self-styled “ghetto reporters” had fought their way onto the nation’s radio and TV stations and thus into America’s consciousness, mocking law-and-order crusaders, exposing police brutality, outraging both feminists and traditionalists with their often retrograde treatment of sex and gender, and demanding that America confront an urban crisis too often ignored.

Rippling outward, its military, economic and political effects were felt throughout the international political system, testing US steadfastness in the face of Saddam Hussein’s political survival, European ability to form a united front on foreign policy issues and the effectiveness of the UN in confronting international aggression. The rationale behind this book, first published in 1993, is to investigate and analyse the various aspects of the crisis, especially in regard to the interactions between internal and international prospects for a new order in the Middle East. It also examines the wider effects of the war, and includes analysis of Europe, America and the Soviet Union. Each one of the essays chosen for this volume has been written by an expert in their field. This collaboration between historians, regional specialists and political scientists, integrating a variety of research methods in the framework of one book, will be useful to a wide range of readers.

This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 361 pages. Book excerpt: “Judeo-Christian” is a remarkably easy term to look right through. Judaism and Christianity obviously share tenets, texts, and beliefs that have strongly influenced American democracy. In this ambitious book, however, K. Healan Gaston challenges the myth of a monolithic Judeo-Christian America. She demonstrates that the idea is not only a recent and deliberate construct, but also a potentially dangerous one. From the time of its widespread adoption in the 1930s, the ostensible inclusiveness of Judeo-Christian terminology concealed efforts to promote particular conceptions of religion, secularism, and politics. Gaston also shows that this new language, originally rooted in arguments over the nature of democracy that intensified in the early Cold War years, later became a marker in the culture wars that continue today. She argues that the debate on what constituted Judeo-Christian—and American—identity has shaped the country’s religious and political culture much more extensively than previously recognized.

This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 385 pages. Book excerpt: Highlights local history to tell a national story about the evolution of the women’s health movement, illuminating the struggles and successes of bringing feminist dreams into clinical spaces. The women’s health movement in the United States, beginning in 1969 and taking hold in the 1970s, was a broad-based movement seeking to increase women’s bodily knowledge, reproductive control, and well-being. It was a political movement that insisted that bodily autonomy provided the key to women’s liberation. It was also an institution-building movement that sought to transform women’s relationships with medicine; it was dedicated to increasing women’s access to affordable health care without the barriers of homophobia, racism, and sexism. But the movement did not only focus on women’s bodies. It also encouraged activists to reimagine their relationships with one another, to develop their relationships in the name of personal and political change, and, eventually, to discover and confront the limitations of the bonds of womanhood. This book examines historically the emergence, development, travails, and triumphs of the women’s health movement in the United States. By bringing medical history and the history of women’s bodies into our emerging understandings of second-wave feminism, the author sheds light on the understudied efforts to shape health care and reproductive control beyond the hospital and the doctor’s office—in the home, the women’s center, the church basement, the bookshop, and the clinic. Lesbians, straight women, and women of color all play crucial roles in this history. At its center are the politics, institutions, and relationships created by and within the women’s health movement, depicted primarily from the perspective of the activists who shaped its priorities, fought its battles, and grappled with its shortcomings.
