Book Searching God in the Media Market: Convergence of Theology and Media PDF. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 334 pages. Book excerpt: This book is holding an excellent dialogue between theology and media disciplines. It provides challenges to theologians to think about their perspectives, attitudes and practices of media and technology while it also challenges those media personnel who are involved in religious broadcasting with nuance theological thinking. This book on the one hand highlights the importance of recognizing the hermeneutic role of imagination, aesthetical aspects and new genre of media and communication today and on the other hand critically engages with media institution and technology that work around only profit making and mere entertaining (and thus alienating from real world) practices and ideas within them. This book brings out some controversies in this area to the light and hopes to initiate further discussions in this area of better community relationship and transformation through media and communication. Having brought some new ideas into light this book brings back a good dialogue between theology and media which will help those involved in rediscovering God's mission within the churches, within the media institutions and also within all those who serve humanity in various ways using the media and communication tools.

This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 287 pages. Book excerpt: Electoral democracy combines the ideas and practices of warfare and welfare, where both work in tandem as near synonyms. India’s robust electoral democracy exemplifies this combination in diverse forms. Critically analysing the 2014 Parliamentary elections beyond the seduction of immediacy and bare cold statistics, this book puts human subjectivity at the centre of election studies and, through an anthropological–sociological approach, makes lives—human and non-human, lived and unlived or unlivable—central to any understanding of elections and democracy. Crafting a new, comprehensive approach, this volume looks at the 2014 elections in relation to the changing nature and forms of elections and democracy globally. Coming from multidisciplinary backgrounds, the contributors to this volume use ethnographic observations to open up a space for new theoretical and methodological reflections on the role of media in Indian elections, the shift to the right in 2014 and its consequences, the significance of traditional Hindu spaces such as the river Ganga in BJP’s victory, the role of gurus like Baba Ramdev, and the electoral choices available to and exercised by the minorities, among others.

Book excerpt: Marcus Moberg offers a new model of religion and religious life in the post-war era, through focusing on the role of markets and media as vectors of contemporary social and cultural change – and therefore institutional religious change. While there is wide agreement among sociologists of religion that there this area is transforming on a global scale, there is less agreement about how these changes should best be approached and conceptualized. In a time of accelerating institutional religious decline, institutional Churches have become ever more susceptible to market-associated discourse and language and are ever more compelled to adapt to the demands of the present-day media environment. Using discourse analysis, Marcus Moberg tracks how new media and marketing language and concepts have entered Christian thinking and discourse. Church, Market, and Media develops a framework that approaches changes in the contemporary religious field in direct relation to the changing socioeconomic makeup of contemporary societies on the whole. Through focusing on the impact of markets and media within the contemporary religious setting of mainline institutional Christian churches in the Western world, the book outlines new avenues for further theorizing the study of religious change.

Book excerpt: A response to the depletion of the rhetoric of sociology and the spiritual capital of theology, this volume explores the remains of Christianity that still lurk as portents in a progressively de-Christianised society seeking replacements for belief. With the sociologist set in the role of an oracle seeking traces of Christianity in a discipline in which the intrusion of theological understandings has become harder to resist, it offers a narrative of belief following the direction of an exemplary portent: the finger. Through the exploration of broad trends in culture and modern history, this study, informed by interactionist thought, examines both the place of sociology in Christian theology, and the failure of theology to connect to its surrounding culture, asking how the two disciplines might meld profitably together. As such, it will appeal to social theorists and theologians, as well as sociologists with interests in religion, culture and secularisation.

Read and Download William H. U. Anderson Book Technology and Theology in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Book Technology and Theology PDF. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 350 pages. Book excerpt: Technology is growing at an exponential rate vis-à-vis humanity’s ability to control it. Moreover, the numerous ethical issues that technology raises are also troubling. These statements, however, may be alarmist—since Telus would tell us “The Future is Friendly”. The Modernist vision of the future was utopic, for instance Star Trek of the 1960s. But postmodern views, such as are found in Blade Runner 2049, are dystopic. Theology is in a unique interdisciplinary position to deal with the many issues, pro and con, that technology raises. Even theologians like Origen in the third century and Aquinas in the thirteenth century made forays into Artificial Intelligence and surrounding issues (they just didn’t know it at the time). Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Transhumanism raise questions about what it means to be human. What is consciousness? What is soul? What are life and death? Can technology really save us and give us eternal life? Theology is in a unique position to handle these questions and issues. This book also has practical applications in terms of ecclesiology (church) in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic—both in terms of what it means to be a church and in terms of the sacraments or ordinances. Is there such a thing as a “Virtual Church” or must we gather physically to constitute one? Are Baptism and Communion legitimate if one is not physically in a church building but are “online”? This book struggles with these and many other questions which will help the scholar or reader make up their own minds, however tentatively.

This book was released on 2023-07-17 with total page 107 pages. Book excerpt: The "Aliens and God" theory explores the potential connection between extraterrestrial life and religious or spiritual beliefs. It suggests that encounters with advanced civilizations could have influenced human religions throughout history. This theory is often speculative and debated within both scientific and philosophical communities. Proponents argue that ancient religious texts and myths may contain descriptions of encounters with advanced beings, which could be interpreted as interactions with extraterrestrial visitors mistaken for gods. Critics of the theory point out that attributing religious beliefs solely to extraterrestrial influence overlooks the complex cultural, historical, and psychological factors that contribute to the formation of religious ideas. They argue that such a theory can oversimplify the rich tapestry of human spirituality and reduce it to a mere byproduct of potential contact with intelligent beings from other planets. In essence, the "Aliens and God" theory is a speculative concept that draws connections between extraterrestrial presence and religious beliefs, but it's important to approach this idea critically and consider the multifaceted origins of human spirituality.

Book excerpt: America' s future will be unlimited if we return to wholesomeness, gratitude, and vision, for we must rise as one people or fall as many. Pillars for Freedom charts a brave path forward to imbue America with strength, economic security, and virtue. The American Experiment is unique in history in its conception of liberty, which is freedom from oppressive government and its yoke. We are a nation that rests on the rule of law and not the imperfections present in all humankind. Today, the bureaucratic state, which controls our government, relies on diversion, untrue narratives, and misdirection to cover incompetence and gross misdeeds. This cannot be our country' s standard. The maintenance of liberty rests upon our faith, our Founding, our families, and our commitments to uncorrupted education and science. Pillars for Freedom describes in consummate detail the powers that America must reconstitute and wield in order that we reclaim our destiny. Our Judeo-Christian heritage must form the center of America' s rebirth. Through marshalling our priceless heritage, we can rebuild our military, secure economic strength, and reassert energy dominance, as we rebuild our civil society. The actions of our government must, at all times, hold the needs of the American people as our North Star. An obligation of governance is to consider the world as it is and to weave together tools that reflect the entire extent of our nation' s power. America must convey resolve through precision in international affairs to meet our strategic objectives. We must renew the American dream. To do so, we must honor the past in order that our country may light the way for the entire world. This momentous book marks a turning point. It is a lantern that will lead us to the break of dawn for our nation.

Book excerpt: For many, U2’s Bono is an icon of both evangelical spirituality and secular moral activism. In this book, Chad E. Seales examines the religious and spiritual culture that has built up around the rock star over the course of his career and considers how Bono engages with that religion in his music and in his activism. Looking at Bono and his work within a wider critique of white American evangelicalism, Seales traces Bono’s career, from his background in religious groups in the 1970s to his rise to stardom in the 1980s and his relationship with political and economic figures, such as Jeffrey Sachs, Bill Clinton, and Jesse Helms. In doing so, Seales shows us a different Bono, one who uses the spiritual meaning of church tradition to advocate for the promise that free markets and for-profits will bring justice and freedom to the world’s poor. Engaging with scholarship in popular culture, music, religious studies, race, and economic development, Seales makes the compelling case that neoliberal capitalism is a religion and that Bono is its best-known celebrity revivalist. Engagingly written and bitingly critical, Religion Around Bono promises to transform our understanding of the rock star’s career and advocacy. Those interested in the intersection of rock music, religion, and activism will find Seales’s study provocative and enlightening.
