This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 213 pages. Book excerpt: Our relationship with things abounds with paradoxes. People assign value to objects in ways that are often deeply personal or idiosyncratic yet at the same time rooted in specific cultural and historical contexts. How do things become meaningful? How do our connections with the world of things define us? In Ming and Qing China, inquiry into things and their contradictions flourished, and its depth and complexity belie the notion that material culture simply reflects status anxiety or class conflict. Wai-yee Li traces notions of the pleasures and dangers of things in the literature and thought of late imperial China. She explores how aesthetic claims and political power intersect, probes the objective and subjective dimensions of value, and questions what determines authenticity and aesthetic appeal. Li considers core oppositions—people and things, elegance and vulgarity, real and fake, lost and found—to tease out the ambiguities of material culture. With examples spanning the late sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries, she shows how relations with things can both encode and resist social change, political crisis, and personal loss. The Promise and Peril of Things reconsiders major works such as The Plum in the Golden Vase, The Story of the Stone, Li Yu’s writings, and Wu Weiye’s poetry and drama, as well as a host of less familiar texts. It offers new insights into Ming and Qing literary and aesthetic sensibilities, as well as the intersections of material culture with literature, intellectual history, and art history.

Book excerpt: Liaozhai Zhiyi (Liaozhai; Chinese: 聊齋, or 聊齋誌異), called in English Strange Tales from a Chinese Lonely Studio is a collection of Classical Chinese stories by Pu Songling comprising close to five hundred "marvel tales" in the zhiguai and chuanqi styles which serve to implicitly criticise societal issues then. Dating back to the Qing dynasty, its earliest publication date is given as 1740. Since then, many of the critically lauded stories have been adapted for other media such as film and television. The main characters of this book apparently are ghosts, foxes, immortals and demons, but the author focused on the everyday life of commoners. He used the supernatural and the unexplainable to illustrate his ideas of society and government. He criticized the corruption and injustice in society and sympathized with the poor. The book is complete translation of all volumes (Vol. 1 to 12) of Liaozhai.

However, it got to a time that the wealth of the land attracted other neighbouring communities who felt this land must be taken away from these people who originally settled here by the means of continued wars since the people were found to be very feeble to wars. This however, didn’t go down well with one of the young men who from so many stories he heard of his grandfather while the grandfather was still alive as regarding who were the real owners of this land that is now becoming a troubled land, decided to take some serious risk and measures. This he did by travelling out of his home-town in search for power acquisition from various goddesses in other regions. Again, as times and days grew older then, the young man after creating fame for himself, decided to be rebellious against those who ennobled him and thereby causing the people more troubles. His attitude became so unbearable few years after his coronation as the King. He was regarded as the people’s death trap. The King’s uncompromising attitude brought fears into the land and its people. This led to those who couldn’t stand these troubles to run for their dear lives. And as a result of these troubles in the land and the King’s aggressive drives, many settlements, which later in the years grew into villages and towns were founded. This thereby led to this community expanding into many parts of the district and beyond. Though some of these settlements were founded in virgin land, that were never occupied by people which the people still lived in them till date. As times kept on drifting, the people became restive of the King and this led the warriors and the elders of the community to plan the death of the King. However, while the people were making every frantic effort to have the King dead, the King was facing more troubles with his wives and children.

Read and Download Halldor Laxness Book Iceland's Bell in PDF, EPub, Mobi, Kindle online. Book Iceland's Bell PDF. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 446 pages. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed Nobel Prize winner: At the close of the 17th century, Iceland is an oppressed Danish colony, suffering under extreme poverty, famine, and plague. A farmer and accused cord-thief named Jon Hreggvidsson makes a bawdy joke about the Danish king and soon after finds himself a fugitive charged with the murder of the king’s hangman. In the years that follow, the hapless but resilient rogue Hreggvidsson becomes a pawn entangled in political and personal conflicts playing out on a far grander scale. Chief among these is the star-crossed love affair between Snaefridur, known as “Iceland’s Sun,” a beautiful, headstrong young noblewoman, and Arnas Arnaeus, the king’s antiquarian, an aristocrat whose worldly manner conceals a fierce devotion to his downtrodden countrymen. As their personal struggle plays itself out on an international stage, Laxness creates a Dickensian canvas of heroism and venality, violence and tragedy, charged with narrative enchantment on every page. Sometimes grim, sometimes uproarious, and always captivating, Iceland's Ball is at once an updating of the traditional Icelandic saga and a caustic social satire.
